Freyja likes Bon Jovi?

Whispers: A moment where the ancient meets the unexpected.

Freyja likes Bon Jovi.

Wait … what?

Freyja is a prominent goddess in Germanic/Norse mythology and a central figure in my own personal ancestry.

And Bon Jovi ... is Bon Jovi

So, how does an ancient goddess connect to a modern rock band?

Well ... I wasn't yet formally exploring what would become Nordic Whisper, but I was opening to the idea that there might be more out there.

One particular morning stands out vividly.

My office was about to announce its closure. That morning I felt the urge to do something completely different and made a quiet, awkward plea to Freyja for guidance. As a football fan, it felt like a spiritual Hail Mary Pass, a hope that somehow, at the last minute, the decision might be swayed.

On the drive in to work, a car merged in front of me on the highway. I didn’t notice at first, but then suddenly, its license plate caught my eye: BONJOVI.

I had to laugh and ask Siri to play some Bon Jovi. Three songs came on before I pulled into the lot: "Seeds," "Wanted Dead or Alive," and "I’ll Be There for You."

At work, the announcement still happened. The outcome was unchanged. But something inside me was shifting.

A quiet, growing trust in the connection had begun. It wasn't until later that evening, as I reflected upon the day's news and the sadness of standing with my direct reports as they processed the announcement, that the link between Freyja and Bon Jovi clicked into place.

For me, the songs became Freyja’s Voice:

Seeds: Freyja isn’t just love and beauty; she’s about growth and transformation. This felt like her reminding me that even in endings, something new is being planted.

Wanted Dead or Alive: This spoke to her warrior side—her resilience and sovereignty. It was a clear message to keep going, no matter what.

I’ll Be There for You: If the first two songs were about action, this one was about presence. It felt like her saying, "I may not change the outcome, but you won't go through this alone."

Even though this felt unfamiliar and very different from the Christian faith I was raised in (and still very much respect and practice), I began to recognize a collaboration with the unseen forces.

It's not quite like praying or worshipping, but perhaps more like playing with two magnets. Turn them one way and there's a powerful pull that draws them together. Flip one, and you can physically feel an invisible force pushing them apart. Both are very real and unseen powers that we use every day; from hanging our kid's artwork on the refigerator to highly advanced medical research.

This is what we mean by a Whisper: a moment where these forces speak, and we find the courage to listen.

Was it a sign others would recognize or agree with? I don't know and it doesn’t matter. It spoke to me and I felt the connection.

What do we do with these Whispers?

They are personal experiences. Sometimes we just notice them. Sometimes we share them. Sometimes we seek an interpretation. Sometimes we simply acknowledge and give thanks.

They are always, however, a chance to connect with something greater than ourselves.

If you’ve experienced something like this—a sign, a nudge, an exceptionally strong coincidence or a moment that felt like it came from beyond—please feel free to share.

This is a safe and welcoming space for us all to learn how to notice the subtle whispers (whatever their source) woven through our busy, modern lives.
